Appearance: Angelica is generally considered a pretty girl, even if she is a bit plain. Unlike her northern relatives her skin is a darker olive tone and usually tanned from being outside in the sun. Her hair is a dark brown that reaches just past her shoulders to her upper back. It’s wavy, and may curl up if it’s too humid out. It takes a while to style because its thick, so most times its either left down or pulled into a ponytail. She not really thin, but she’s not heavy either. What she lacks in weight she makes up in curves though.

When it comes to how she dresses, don’t expect anything fancy. She almost never dresses up except when she has to. Her outfits are mostly comfortable and working class. She does wear jewelry though. She had her ears pierced when she was younger and has worn earring ever since. She also has a gold cross necklace which was given to her many years ago as a Christmas gift from Spain.

Defining Features:
~Her Necklace would most definitely be a defining feature, seeing as she almost never takes it off because of sentimental value and the fact that it was one of the few gifts Spain ever gave her.
~Angelica also has a particularly stubborn hair curl which is similar to Romano’s, only going to opposite way.

Personality: Angelica manages to pull of the sweet girl act very well, probably because its somewhat true. She seems to be a happy girl, always smiling and usually offering a “good morning/afternoon/evening”. She tries hard to remember her manners and to be nice to people. If someone asks her to do something, she’ll more than likely do it. Another thing with seems to work in her favor, oddly enough, is her curiosity for things. She enjoys learning new things.She’s also just quiet enough for people to forget she’s there.

Angelica’s problem though is that she’s not totally that sweet girl she seems to be. To start off with, she can be the most spiteful person on the planet if she doesn’t like someone. When you add this with her tendency to act before she things you get a recipe for trouble, especially if she is upset about something. Usually she just winds up saying something she shouldn’t.

That being said, Angelica just wants to have fun. She does what she enjoys regardless of what other people say. She’s headstrong and stubborn. She will stand up for what she believes in and doesn’t back down. On the flip side, she also tends not to listen when people are trying to give her advice. She likes to think she knows everything, which can lead to some nasty arguments with people.

Likes:
~Wine: She loves her wine, especially when the sweeter ones.
~The ocean/swimming: being surrounded by water, she’s become pretty good at swimming. She’ll gladly spend a day at the beach given the chance.
~Sweets/Desserts: She has the biggest sweet tooth you can imagine. She usually has some type of sweet stashed somewhere for a snack.
~Cooking: Angelica prides herself on being a good cook. She enjoys every moment she gets to be in the kitchen cooking.
~Oranges: Her favorite fruit. If she could, she would eat nothing but sweets and oranges.
~Christmas: For her, Christmas is the best time of the year. She feels as though its the one time that people put aside their differences and can actually get along.
~Naps: She’s just really, really lazy. She can sleep practically anywhere.

Dislikes:
~The Cold: Sicily is usually a warm place. Winters are short and mild. Her idea of cold is about 50F. Anything colder than that is a huge no.
~Rude people: Just a general dislike, even if its a bit hypocritical.
~People who only remember her because of the Mafia: There’s more to her than the Mafia, so much more. Anyone who thinks the only thing to her is the mafia is subject to her temper.
~Smoking: She just doesn’t like the smell. It leaves a bad taste in her mouth.
~People who assume she’s uneducated for any reason (as she’s a girl, the education in Sicily isn’t the best, ect). She’s not the smartest, but she’s not uneducated either.
~Earthquakes: She’s used to them, considering Sicily sits on top of a fault. That doesn’t mean she likes them though.


Fears:
~Only being known for the Mafia: This is only in regards to the more modern day criminal organization. She didn’t mind it when it was more for protection and order, in fact she was glad to have it. But she hates the bad reputation that it is associated with in modern times and the fact that most people outside her borders seem to only know her for that.
~Losing her family: Despite the differences they may have had in the past, Angelica is glad to have the rest of the Italy. They’re important to her and she considers them her siblings, even if they don’t feel the same way about her.
~A major volcanic eruption: Even though she’s used to eruptions, she’s still afraid that one day there will be a huge eruption that kills off a significant percentage of her population. She’s basically afraid of what happened in Pompeii happening to her.
~Major Earthquakes and Tsunamis: She’s had a few really powerful earthquakes and tsunamis in the past, some of which were followed by devastating tsunamis. The amount of pain combined with the massive death and destruction has left a lasting impact on her.
~Heights: She’s not so scared of them that she can’t function, but she really would much rather have her feet on the ground.

Fun Facts:
~She’s highly superstitious and a firm believer in bad luck.
~Although not actually a vegetarian, Angelica eats very little meat (most Sicilian dishes include fish instead of meat). That doesn’t mean she won’t eat meat if its given though.
~Angelica is very adept at playing the violin. She picked it up during her time with Austria and decided to just keep with it for no other reason than she liked how it sounded.
~For whatever reason Angelica is scary quiet whenever she walks. It’s not uncommon for people not to hear her enter or leave a room.
~Its not uncommon to find her walking on rooftops. She like to walk on them to clear her head or get away from people who are annoying her.
~Angelica’s aim is scarily accurate. It’s taken a long time to get that way though.
~She has a pet rabbit that she’s named Archimedes.

The Arabs
827 AD- Beginning of Arab invasion with landing of 10,000 Arabs, Berbers and Spanish Muslims at Mazara del Vallo.
832 AD- Arabs conquer Palermo making it their capital. Palermo becomes one of the most populous and cosmopolitan centers in the world.
863 AD- The introduction of mulberries (for silk making), oranges and sugar cane.
878 AD- Arabs conquer Syracuse.
902 AD - Palermo has supplanted Byzantine-Greek Syracuse as Sicily's most populous and important city. All of Sicily is under Arab administration.
1038 AD- Byzantines attempt to exploit Arab feuding as General George Maniakes tries to bring Sicily back under the influence of Constantinople.

The Normans
1059 AD - Pope Nicolo' II authorises the Hauteville family of Normans to occupy any area of Southern Italy as long as they don’t recognize the power of Constantinople.
1060 AD- Unsuccessful Norman incursion into coastal northeastern Sicily
1064 AD -Norman Roger Hauteville invades Messina in response to a call for help from the Arabs against the Byzantines
1071 AD - Normans take Palermo following a six month naval blockade and take possession of Sicily. Arabic is replaced by French and Italian and the existing church is Latinised. 1,500 years of Greek influence comes to an end.
1105 AD- Roger II becomes the ruler of Sicily.
1130 AD- Roger II crowned first king of Sicily. His rule has a major influence over the entire Mediterranean including the Assizes of Ariano (1140).
1154 AD- Roger II dies and reign of King William I "the Bad" begins
1161 AD- Matthew Bonellus leads revolt of Norman barons
1166-1189 AD- King William II (William the Good) reigns and establishes second archbishopric at Monreale.
1177 AD - William II marries Joan, daughter of Henry II of England
1189-1194 AD- Norman influence begins to decline following the death of William II
1190 - Richard I of England (Richard the Lion-Heart) stops in Messina while on his way to the Third Crusade and sacks the city.

The Swabians
1194 AD- Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI von Hohenstaufen and the Teutonic Order of knights arrive. Henry VI is crowned king of Sicily.
1197 AD- Henry VI dies and Frederick II takes over. He rules from Sicily.
1231 AD - Constitutions of Melfi become legal code for Kingdom of Italy under Frederick II.
1250 AD - Frederick II dies. After his death the pope sells Sicily to the King of England who in turn gives it to his son.

The Angevins
1266 AD- The French Pope deposes Edmund and gives Sicily to Charles of Anjou. The Angevins oppress the Sicilian people as no other power has and are generally hated.
1282 AD- The Sicilian Vespers, a popular uprising, kills thousands of French occupiers.

The Aragonese
1282 - Peter of Aragon lands in Trapani and is acclaimed king at Palermo. His arrival marks the beginning of Spanish rule in Sicily. It also marks the beginning of Sicily’s isolation from the rest of Europe.
1282-1302 AD- War of the Vespers between the Aragonese and the Angevins fought mainly on mainland Italy and in Spain.
1302 AD - Peace of Caltabellotta treaty signed between the Aragonese and the Angevins. The Peace gives Sicily to Spain and the mainland territories to the French.
1347 AD - Ships arriving at Messina from eastern Mediterranean bring bubonic plague (Black Death) to Europe.
1442 AD- Sicilian and Neapolitan crowns united under Alfonso V as "Two Sicilies"
1492 AD- Spanish attention drifts to America. Sicily falls under the control of corrupt nobility.

The Spanish Habsburgs
16th Century - Isolation and misgovernment continues. Nobility reinforce the feudal system forcing peasants off the land and leaving estates in the hands of Massari or Gabellotti, bailiffs charged with collection of rent. Sicily is now essentially a source of funds for Spanish expansion. The mafia finds its beginnings in this time period.
1647 - Revolt of Palermo
1669 - A huge eruption of Mt. Etna destroys much land around Catania.
1674-78- Revolt of Messina
1693 Earthquake and following plague destroys much of the east coast and kills 5% of the population.
1713 - Treaty of Utrecht following the death of Charles II of Spain gives Sicily to the House of Savoy.
1720 - The House of Savoy trades Sicily with the Austrians for Sardinia.


The Bourbons
1734 - Bourbon King Charles I reclaims Sicily for the Spanish
1759 - Charles I becomes Charles III of Spain leaving Sicily to be governed indirectly by Ferdinand IV of Naples.
1799 - Napoleon invades Naples, forcing Ferdinand to flee to Palermo in Admiral Nelson’s ship

British Rule
1806- Sicily official comes under Britain’s control.
1812 - Lord Bentinck, the commander of the British forces, forces the introduction of a two-chamber parliament based on British model, abolishing the feudal privileges which had been present.
1815 - Napoleon is defeated and the British abandon Sicily to the Bourbons.

The Bourbons
1815 Ferdinand returns to Naples and declares himself Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies. The British designed constitution is abandoned. For the next 45 years revolutionary spirit grows as Spanish rule becomes increasingly unsound.

The Unification of Italy and World War II
1860 - Garibaldi begins unification of Italy having landed at Marsala on May 11. He swiftly defeats the Bourbons and takes over Sicily. Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy is declared King.
1866 - Revolt of Palermo quashed by Turin
1891-94 - Fasci Siciliani (workers organizations) achieve some improvements in land laws, but are quashed by 15,000 troop sent to Palermo by prime minister Francesco Crispi.
1908 - 80,000 killed in the Messina earthquake and tsunami (the strongest earthquake in Europe).
1922-43 - Mussolini becomes prime minister. Cesare Mori imprisons 1,000s of Mafia suspects pushing criminals underground.
1930s Sicily becomes of essential strategic importance during Mussolini’s colonization attempts in North Africa.
1943 - Following 6 weeks of bombing, allies land at Gela and Syracuse, beginning the Allied Invasion of Sicily. Upon its success Sicily becomes the first part of Europe reclaimed by the Allied Forces.
1944-"Massacre of Bread" in Palermo

The Italian Republic
1946 - Sicily becomes an autonomous region of Italy
1958 - Italy joins the European Union (then the Common Market)
1968 - Major earthquake in the Val di Belice.
1986-1987 - “Maxiprocessi” against over 500 Mafia members.
1992 - Mafia assassinations of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.
1993 - Arrest of Salvatore Riina (boss of bosses) in Corleone.
1997 - The Teatro Massimo (the third largest opera house in Europe) reopens in Palermo after 25 years of closure.

Walking on rooftops that would probably cave in at any second was probably not the smartest thing to do. Not that Angelica cared as she was doing just that. The sound of her footsteps on the roof tiles echoed throughout the empty streets. The city had been evacuated as the allied soldiers drew closer. By now even the last of the Axis soldiers had fled back to the mainland.

Angelica groaned in pain as she sat on the edge of the roof she had been walking on. Invasions were always a painful experience for her. Every part of her body hurt, although not as badly as it did a month ago when this invasion had started. She would feel better as soon as this was all over. Standard procedure was to go hand yourself over to the invader. Or fight them off. Considering the lack of troops at the moment, that second choice wouldn't really be an option.

The sound of footsteps below made her sit up. Brown eyes noticed a very confused and lost looking soldier walking on the street below. After a moment of debate she decided to climb down. She landed quietly on the street behind him.
"Excuse me?" She almost giggled as the soldier jumped and turned look at her. The soldier looked at her then paled.
Now that he was facing her she recognized him. She had spend the better part of a decade in New York with said state. She would be blind not to recognize her. "York? What are you doing here?" She asked, tilting her head.

The State blushed. “Would you believe trying to find my way around?” She said sheepishly. Angelica sighed.

“Mio dio...Come on. Tell me where you need to go and I’ll take you...and on the way you can tell me how in the world you managed to convince America to let you come here vi.”
